Photo Courtsey of Brenda Ladd

Ann Alva Wieding has always been captivated by the natural world and the patterns that emanate from it. Fractals, symmetry, light, color and composition do an intimate dance that she loves to observe. She strives to capture and display the visual drama that is the interplay between these elements in the still image. She focuses her lens on a moment in time where the light emanating from the Sun and the Moon may never be the same again.

Rather than presenting a factual reality with her collage work, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. Her photos are an investigation into representations of (seemingly) concrete element of light as well as depictions and ideas that can only be realized in photography. With Plato’s allegory of the cave in mind, she makes work that deals with the documentation of celestial events and the question of how they can be presented.

By juxtaposing photography and collage the artist hopes to exam the realm of dark landscapes and the questions that science, religion, magic and intuition pose in her mind. This results in the fact that the artist can easily imagine an own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. By examining the ambiguity and origination via retakes and variations, she tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.

Her works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver. These works focus on concrete questions that determine our existence. Ann currently lives and works in Austin.

ARTiculation Artist Collective

In 2015 artists Hannah Lee and Ann Alva Wieding were looking for a unicorn of sorts space to exhibit their artwork during the East Austin Studio Tour. They approached a friend, Dawn Hewitt, who they thought might have some insight into finding a space. Together, the three co-organizers decided to pursue this endeavor. Dawn quickly found a home for Austin Art Refugees at The North Door while Hannah and Ann sent out information to other local Austin artists who were also having trouble finding space. The response was phenomenal, allowing the co-organizers of the Austin Art Refugees to hand select the artists in their first exhibition at E.A.S.T. Austin Art Refugees first show was a resounding success. Through the collaboration, it provided  unique experience that promoted exposure of twenty professional artists and an opportunity for the community to support and be a part of Austin’s ever changing art culture together.

Today, the Austin Art Refugees has transformed into ARTiculation and continues to work as an artists collective to bring increased visibility and new opportunities to professional Austin artists in an active creative community. Through the collective, participating artists are given the opportunity to be part of a group of artists with various levels of experience to draw from.

ARTiculation will be focusing on growing our community and purpose with the following objectives:

-Host reguarly scheduled events that create opportunities for connnections among peer artists to exchange ideas, find support and foster mentorships.

-Facilitate in person and online critiques and discourse for artist to engage in before shows.

-Maintain a membership base that creates community and strengthens the voices of artists advocating for inclution in the City of Austin's economic growth and provides finanical sustainablity for the organization.

-Create, curate and produce opportunities for members to show work collectively during the annual EAST & WEST Austin Studio Tours.
